Menorca in September: what to do, weather, beaches and travel tips

Menorca in September: what to do, weather, beaches and travel tips

Discover what it is like to travel to Menorca in September: the best beaches, plans, weather, what to pack and tips for enjoying the island with fewer crowds.

September is one of the best months to travel to Menorca. Summer can still be felt on the island, the sea remains pleasantly warm and the days are still long enough to enjoy beaches, towns and excursions.

But there is one important difference compared with July and August: Menorca begins to recover its peaceful rhythm.

The beaches are usually less crowded, it is easier to get around the island and you can visit some of its best-known places without encountering the same concentration of travellers as during the busiest weeks of summer.

The weather is still generally favourable, although September also marks the beginning of a slightly more changeable period. That is why it is a good idea to travel with some flexibility.

If you are thinking about visiting Menorca in September, here is everything you need to know to make the most of your trip.

The most important things you need to know

  • September is still a very good month to enjoy Menorca’s beaches.
  • There are fewer visitors than in July and August.
  • The sea remains pleasantly warm after the whole summer.
  • The first days of the month usually feel more summery than the final weeks.
  • There may be occasional rainy days or isolated storms.
  • It is an excellent time to combine the beach with hiking, towns and gastronomy.
  • It is still advisable to book a car and accommodation in advance, especially during the first half of the month.
  • Some tourist businesses may begin to reduce their opening hours towards the end of September.

Is it worth travelling to Menorca in September?

Yes. In fact, September is one of our favourite months for discovering Menorca.

The island retains much of its summer atmosphere, but without reaching the usual occupancy levels of August. This makes it possible to enjoy a quieter Menorca.

In September you can get up early to visit a cove, have lunch by the sea, explore a town in the afternoon and end the day watching the sunset without feeling that you need to rush from one place to another.

It is also an especially appealing time for couples and travellers looking for peace and quiet.

Families with children who have not yet started the school year can also find better conditions than in August, both in terms of atmosphere and availability.

What is the weather like in Menorca in September?

September is a transitional month between summer and autumn.

For much of the month you can still find sunny days and pleasant temperatures for swimming. The sea has accumulated heat during July and August, so it normally remains very pleasant.

However, it is advisable to be a little more flexible than in the height of summer.

You may encounter:

  • An occasional rainy day.
  • Isolated storms.
  • Changes in wind direction.
  • Cloudy days.
  • Slightly cooler nights.

This does not mean that September is a rainy month when you cannot enjoy the beach. Quite the opposite: many days still have completely summery conditions.

The most important advice is to check the forecast every morning and adapt your plans.

  1. Enjoy the most famous coves with fewer crowds

One of the biggest advantages of travelling to Menorca in September is being able to enjoy its beaches more comfortably.

During July and August, places such as Cala Macarella, Cala Mitjana or Cala en Turqueta can be very busy.

In September, the situation usually improves progressively.

Some coves worth including are:

  • Cala Macarella and Macarelleta.
  • Cala Mitjana.
  • Cala en Turqueta.
  • Son Saura.
  • Cala Pregonda.
  • Cavalleria.
  • Cala Galdana.

That said, fewer visitors does not mean that the beaches are empty. During the first days of September there is still plenty of tourist activity.

If you want to enjoy the most popular coves in peace, getting up early is still a good idea.

  1. Choose the beach according to the wind

In September, it becomes even more important to check the wind before choosing a beach.

One of Menorca’s advantages is that you can change completely from one coast to the other in a relatively short time.

As a general guide:

If the wind is blowing from the north, the southern beaches usually offer better conditions.

You can consider:

  • Cala Galdana.
  • Cala Mitjana.
  • Cala en Turqueta.
  • Cala en Porter.
  • Son Saura.

If the wind is blowing from the south, it may be better to head north.

For example:

  • Arenal d’en Castell.
  • Es Grau.
  • Cavalleria.
  • Cala Pregonda.
  • Cala Morell.

Do not apply this rule automatically. Also check the swell, gusts and actual sea conditions.

  1. Walk a section of the Camí de Cavalls

September is much more pleasant than July or August for walking.

The heat starts to become less intense, especially in the morning and late afternoon, so you can take the opportunity to walk one of the sections of the famous Camí de Cavalls.

This trail circles Menorca and connects beaches, forests, cliffs and some of the island’s most beautiful landscapes.

You do not need to cover long distances.

You can combine a short walk with a swim, for example:

  • Cala Galdana – Cala Mitjana.
  • Son Saura – Es Talaier.
  • Cavalleria area.
  • Es Grau and the surrounding area.

Always take water, sun protection and suitable footwear.

  1. Visit Ciutadella without August’s frantic pace

Ciutadella deserves a visit on any trip to Menorca, but September is especially pleasant for exploring it.

You can stroll through:

  • Plaça des Born.
  • Ses Voltes.
  • Menorca Cathedral.
  • The old town.
  • Ciutadella harbour.

A good idea is to arrive in the middle of the afternoon, explore the centre when the heat eases, have dinner and then stroll around the harbour.

The atmosphere remains lively, especially during the first half of September.

  1. Discover Mahón and its harbour

Mahón is another essential visit.

Spend a few hours in the historic centre, visit the Mercado del Claustro del Carmen, wander through its streets and finish by walking down towards the harbour.

September is perfect for combining Mahón with nearby places such as:

  • Es Castell.
  • Cales Fonts.
  • Binibeca.
  • Sant Lluís.
  • Punta Prima.

This way you can organise a full day in the eastern part of Menorca.

  1. Take a boat trip

If the sea is calm, September is still an excellent time to go out by boat.

You can find excursions departing from areas such as:

  • Ciutadella.
  • Fornells.
  • Mahón.
  • Cala Galdana.

Sailing allows you to discover coves and corners of the coast from a different perspective.

Before booking, always check the weather conditions. In September, the wind can change more than on some days in the height of summer.

  1. Go snorkelling or kayaking

The sea still maintains a pleasant temperature, so September remains perfect for water activities.

Snorkelling works particularly well in sheltered coves with little swell.

You can also rent a kayak or join a guided excursion to explore caves, small coves and stretches of coast that are difficult to reach on foot.

If it is windy, check with the company running the activity beforehand.

  1. Enjoy the sunsets

In September, the sun begins to set earlier than in July and August. This can even be an advantage: you can plan a full afternoon, watch the sunset and then go for dinner at a relaxed pace.

Some of our favourite places are:

  • Punta Nati.
  • Pont d’en Gil.
  • Cavalleria Lighthouse.
  • Cap d’Artrutx.
  • Cala Morell.

Arrive around 30 or 45 minutes before sunset so you can also enjoy the beautiful light beforehand.

  1. Try Menorcan cuisine

September invites you to spend more time enjoying good food.

As well as restaurants by the sea, look for places that work with local produce.

Do not leave without trying some classics:

  • Mahón-Menorca cheese.
  • Lobster stew.
  • Oliaigua.
  • Sobrasada.
  • Stuffed aubergines.
  • Formatjades.
  • Pastissets.
  • Menorcan gin.

You can also visit a cheese dairy, a farm or a winery if you want to discover the island’s more rural and gastronomic side.

  1. Have a plan ready for a cloudy day

September can bring spectacular days, but also the occasional greyer one.

If the weather is not suitable for the beach, you can:

  • Visit the Museum of Menorca.
  • Explore Ciutadella.
  • Discover Mahón.
  • Visit a cheese dairy.
  • Go to a winery.
  • Visit La Mola Fortress.
  • Visit Es Mercadal or Ferreries.
  • Spend the day enjoying local cuisine.

Do not automatically cancel the whole day because it rains in the morning. The weather can change considerably during the day.

What to pack for Menorca in September

Your suitcase will still be mainly for summer, but it is worth adding a few extra items.

We recommend taking:

  •  Swimwear.
  • Light clothing.
  • Sun protection.
  • A cap or hat.
  • Comfortable footwear.
  • Walking shoes.
  • A light jacket.
  • Some long-sleeved clothing.
  • A lightweight raincoat.
  • A backpack for the beach and excursions.

In the evening, you may appreciate a light jacket, especially if it is windy.

Do you need to book in September?

It depends on when you travel.

During the first half of September there are still plenty of tourists, so it is advisable to book:

  • Accommodation.
  • A rental car.
  • Popular restaurants.
  • Boat trips.
  • Special activities.

As the month progresses, it usually becomes easier to find availability.

However, you should also bear in mind that some businesses begin to reduce their opening hours as the main season comes to an end.

The first half of the month still has plenty of tourism, but generally less than August. As September progresses, the island gradually becomes quieter.

Conclusion

Travelling to Menorca in September is an excellent choice if you want to continue enjoying summer but prefer a slightly quieter island.

You can still spend the day at Cala Mitjana, Macarella or Pregonda, go out by boat, snorkel, discover Ciutadella and Mahón or finish the day watching the sunset at Punta Nati.

At the same time, temperatures begin to become more pleasant for walking, exploring the Camí de Cavalls or discovering the inland towns.

The key is simple: check the weather, keep your itinerary flexible and combine beach, nature, gastronomy and culture.

September is precisely one of those times when Menorca begins to regain its calm without having completely left summer behind.
